A crane collapsed on an expressway outside Bangkok on Thursday, killing at least two people. The incident occurred in Samut Sakhon Province, southwest of the capital. Crews were constructing an elevated section of the motorway, which was not yet open to traffic. The cause of the collapse remains unclear.
The crane fell, causing parts of the elevated structure to cave in. Two vehicles were crushed in the collapse. Rescue workers are at the scene, but the possibility of additional survivors is unknown. Authorities in Samut Sakhon have not commented.
This is the second fatal crane incident in Thailand in two days. On Wednesday, a crane collapsed onto a passenger train, killing at least 32 people. Italian-Thai Development, the contractor for the expressway, was also in charge of the construction site where Wednesday's accident occurred. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment. Investigations into both incidents are expected to begin immediately. The accidents raise concerns about construction safety standards in Thailand, particularly on large infrastructure projects.
