Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni took a strong lead in provisional results from Thursday's presidential election, according to the electoral agency. The results, announced Friday morning, indicated Museveni leading with 76 percent of the votes, based on results from 45 polling stations. Opposition leader Bobi Wine followed with approximately 20 percent.
The election took place after a tense and often violent campaign, with Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, seeking a seventh term in office. Wine, a 43-year-old pop star-turned-politician, alleged "massive" fraud during the election. He did not provide documentary proof of these allegations, and authorities have not yet responded.
Ugandans cast their ballots on Thursday amidst an internet blackout. The election occurred against a backdrop of increasing concerns about political freedom and human rights in the country. Museveni, once a critic of African leaders who overstayed their welcome, now seeks to extend his rule.
Wine's National Unity Platform (NUP) party reported late Thursday that the military and police had surrounded Wine's house. The election and its aftermath are being closely watched by international observers, given Uganda's role as a key player in regional stability. The final results of the election are expected to be announced in the coming days.
