Yoweri Museveni took an early lead in Uganda's presidential election. At least seven opposition supporters were killed in overnight clashes. The violence occurred as results trickled in from Thursday's vote. Opposition members reported attacks by security forces at a Member of Parliament's home in Butambala. Police attributed the violence to the opposition. The electoral commission announced Museveni held 75% of the vote based on 60% of polling stations reporting. Bobi Wine trailed with 21%. Wine's home in Kampala was surrounded by security forces. His party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), stated he and his wife were under house arrest. An internet shutdown hampered the flow of information. Opposition MP Muwanga Kivumbi told AFP that security forces used tear gas and live bullets against hundreds of people. Museveni has been in power since 1986 and is seeking a seventh term. Final results are pending. The situation remains tense.
