England will launch a new £1 billion emergency cash fund in April. The Crisis and Resilience Fund will provide financial aid to low-income individuals. People facing unexpected financial hardship can apply through their local council. The fund is available regardless of current benefit status.
The scheme begins at the start of April and will run for three years. Councils can distribute funds to those experiencing sudden income loss or unexpected expenses. Examples include job loss or a broken boiler. The goal is to prevent individuals from entering a financial crisis.
The Local Government Association expressed concern over funding levels. A recent survey indicated most councils believe the allocated amount is insufficient. The cash element marks a change from previous support methods.
This new fund replaces the temporary Household Support Fund. The previous fund was established in 2021 and extended repeatedly. It was scheduled to end in March.
Councils will now administer the Crisis and Resilience Fund. They will begin accepting applications in April. The government expects the fund to provide crucial support to vulnerable individuals.
