England will launch a new £1 billion emergency cash fund in April. The Crisis and Resilience Fund will provide financial aid to low-income individuals. People can apply through their local councils. The fund aims to address sudden financial shocks.
The scheme begins at the start of April. It will run annually for the next three years. Councils can distribute funds for unexpected expenses or income loss. Job loss or broken boilers are examples. The goal is to prevent crises.
The Local Government Association expressed concerns. A recent survey indicated funding may be insufficient. Many councils believe current resources won't meet local needs.
This replaces the temporary Household Support Fund. That fund was extended repeatedly since 2021. It was set to expire at the end of March.
The government will release further details in the coming weeks. Councils will then begin accepting applications.
