NASA's Artemis II mission is one step closer to launch. The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket will roll out to Launch Complex 39B early Saturday. The rollout begins around 7:00 am EST (11:00 UTC) from Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building.
The SLS rocket will travel atop a crawler-transporter. This massive vehicle will take eight to ten hours to cover four miles. The Artemis II mission marks a significant milestone. It is the first crewed mission to the Moon's vicinity since 1972.
Artemis II will send four astronauts around the far side of the Moon. This flight will set a new record for human distance from Earth. Managers are on alert for "launch fever" as pressure mounts.
The Artemis program aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon. This mission is a critical step in that endeavor.
Next, teams will conduct final checks at the launch pad. Launch is scheduled for later this year.
