Many residents in Kyiv are enduring freezing temperatures without heat or electricity following Russian strikes targeting energy infrastructure, according to NPR's Joanna Kakissis, reporting from the Ukrainian capital on Saturday. The attacks have severely damaged the Ukrainian energy grid, leaving cities, including Kyiv, without essential services for extended periods amidst freezing conditions.
Ukrainians are experiencing their most challenging winter since Russia's full-scale invasion nearly four years ago, Kakissis noted. The repeated Russian attacks have had a crippling effect on the nation's ability to provide basic necessities.
"It's cold," Kakissis said, describing the situation in Kyiv. "The sun is shining today, and that does make things a little better."
The ongoing conflict has placed immense strain on Ukraine's infrastructure and its citizens, forcing them to cope with severe shortages and harsh weather conditions. The extent of the damage to the energy grid is still being assessed, and efforts to restore services are underway, though hampered by continued attacks.
