England will launch a new £1 billion emergency cash fund in April. The Crisis and Resilience Fund will provide financial aid to low-income individuals. People facing unexpected financial hardship can apply through their local council. The program is open to all, regardless of current benefit status.
The fund addresses sudden income loss or unexpected expenses. Examples include job loss or broken appliances. Councils can distribute funds to prevent crises. The scheme replaces the Household Support Fund.
Some councils express disappointment over funding levels. The Local Government Association found many councils believe the funding is insufficient. The previous scheme was extended on a rolling basis since 2021. It was set to expire at the end of March.
The cash payout marks a change from the previous scheme. Councils will now administer the new Crisis and Resilience Fund. The fund will operate annually for the next three years.
