Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by Jeff Bezos, announced plans to launch over 5,400 satellites to create a new communications network called TeraWave, directly challenging Elon Musk's Starlink in the satellite internet market. The company aims to provide continuous, high-speed internet access to businesses and governments worldwide, with a target launch date of the satellites by the end of 2027, according to multiple news sources.
TeraWave intends to offer faster data transmission speeds than its rival, Starlink, which is part of Musk's rocket firm, SpaceX. However, even with the planned launch of thousands of satellites, Blue Origin would still have fewer in orbit than Starlink, which currently dominates the satellite internet market.
While Starlink offers internet and phone services to individual customers, Blue Origin stated that TeraWave will focus on data communication for businesses and governments. Amazon, also founded by Bezos, is developing Project Kuiper, which will also compete in the satellite internet arena, focusing on individual customers.
The announcement signals a growing competition in the satellite internet sector, with multiple players vying to provide global internet access. The launch of TeraWave would mark a significant step for Blue Origin in expanding its reach beyond space tourism and rocket development.
