Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by Jeff Bezos, announced plans to launch over 5,400 satellites by the end of 2027 to create a new communications network called TeraWave, directly challenging Elon Musk's Starlink in the satellite internet market, according to multiple news sources. TeraWave aims to provide continuous, high-speed internet access to businesses and governments globally.
The TeraWave network intends to offer faster data transmission speeds compared to Starlink, which is currently the dominant player in the satellite internet sector. However, even with the planned launch of thousands of satellites, Blue Origin's TeraWave would still have fewer satellites in orbit than Starlink, according to the BBC.
While TeraWave will focus on serving businesses and governments, Amazon, also founded by Bezos, is pursuing a separate satellite internet venture called Project Kuiper, which will target individual customers. Both TeraWave and Project Kuiper will compete in the broader satellite internet arena.
Blue Origin stated that TeraWave will have the "ability to move large amounts of data much more quickly than rival services." The company aims to provide continuous internet access around the world with its new network.
The launch of TeraWave marks a significant entry for Blue Origin into the competitive satellite internet market, pitting it against established players like Starlink and Amazon's own Project Kuiper. The company anticipates launching its satellites by the end of 2027.
