Former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding, wanted for alleged drug trafficking and murder, was arrested in Mexico after years on the run. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest Friday, calling Wedding a "modern day Pablo Escobar." Wedding, 44, faces extradition to the US.
Wedding was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He is accused of leading a transnational drug operation. The operation allegedly moved tonnes of cocaine across international borders. US officials suspected Wedding was living in Mexico under the protection of the Sinaloa drug cartel.
The arrest was a joint effort. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) assisted the FBI. RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme stated the arrest makes communities safer.
Transnational organized crime poses a global challenge. International cooperation is essential to combat it. The case highlights the complex interplay between sports, crime, and international relations.
Wedding is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
