Peruvian President José Jerí is facing potential impeachment proceedings following the release of videos showing him in secret meetings with Chinese businessman Yang Zhihua. The videos, leaked earlier this month, depict Jerí arriving at Xin Yan Restaurant, owned by Yang, on December 26, and later at one of Yang's corner stores in Lima.
The first video shows Jerí being dropped off by a vehicle belonging to the presidential office and attempting to conceal his face as he entered the restaurant. The second video shows Jerí speaking on his phone in front of Yang at one of his stores.
The meetings have raised concerns due to scrutiny surrounding Yang's business dealings. Local media reported that one of Yang's stores had been ordered closed for violating a municipal ordinance. However, three days later, a federal regulatory body overturned the ordinance.
Peru has experienced significant political instability in recent years. Over the past decade, the country has had seven presidents, none of whom served longer than three years. Jerí, 39, assumed the presidency last October after the impeachment of his predecessor.
The leaked videos have prompted calls for an investigation into potential conflicts of interest and abuse of power. Opposition parties have indicated they are considering initiating impeachment proceedings against Jerí.
"These videos raise serious questions about the president's conduct and his relationship with Mr. Yang," said Congressman Ricardo Torres, a member of the opposition party Fuerza Popular. "We need to determine whether there was any undue influence or quid pro quo involved."
Government officials have not yet released an official statement regarding the situation.
The situation remains fluid, and the coming days are expected to be crucial in determining the future of Jerí's presidency. The Peruvian Congress is expected to debate the matter and decide whether to proceed with impeachment proceedings.
