Obesity, High Blood Pressure Linked to Dementia; Quantum Entanglement Enhances Sensors; Ukrainians Face Winter Power Cuts; and More
January 26, 2026 – New research suggests a direct link between obesity, high blood pressure, and the development of dementia. A separate study demonstrated that quantum entanglement can link atoms across space to improve measurement accuracy. Meanwhile, Ukrainians are struggling with power outages due to Russian attacks on the energy grid.
A new genetic study indicates that obesity and high blood pressure may directly cause dementia, not just increase the risk, according to Science Daily. Researchers analyzed data from large populations in Denmark and the U.K. and found strong evidence that higher body weight can damage brain health over time, especially when it leads to elevated blood pressure. "Much of the dementia risk appeared to be tied to vascular damage in the brain, which affects blood flow and cognitive function," Science Daily reported. The findings highlight weight and blood pressure control as potentially powerful tools for preventing dementia before symptoms appear.
In other science news, researchers have demonstrated that quantum entanglement can link atoms across space to improve measurement accuracy, according to the University of Basel. By splitting an entangled group of atoms into separate clouds, they were able to measure electromagnetic fields more precisely than before. "The technique takes advantage of quantum connections acting at a distance," Science Daily stated. It could enhance tools such as atomic clocks and gravity sensors.
Meanwhile, Ukrainians are facing long cuts to heating, electricity, and water during the coldest winter since Russia's full-scale invasion nearly four years ago, NPR reported. "After repeated Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy grid, Ukrainians are sharing hacks online on how to survive winter power cuts," according to NPR. After a Jan. 9 attack, nearly 6,000 homes were left without heating in Kyiv, according to the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
In Minneapolis, U.S. Border Patrol agents were seen standing guard at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building on Jan. 8, according to Foreign Policy.
