International Headlines: Plane Crash in India, Belarus Joins 'Board of Peace,' and More
A series of international events unfolded on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, ranging from a deadly plane crash in India to political fallout in the United States.
In India, a private plane crash killed five people, including Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, according to Sky News. The aircraft crashed in an open field in western India while traveling from Mumbai to Pawar's home city, Baramati. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute following the crash. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, in the United States, President Donald Trump distanced himself from remarks made by a senior administration member regarding Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse shot dead by ICE agents in Minneapolis over the weekend. Sky News reported that Trump adviser Stephen Miller called Pretti a "would-be assassin," a characterization Trump disagreed with. The shooting occurred weeks after another ICE officer killed 37-year-old Renee Good in the same city.
The aftermath of calls to abolish ICE continued to reverberate in Minneapolis, as Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar was sprayed with an unknown substance during a town hall meeting on Tuesday, Euronews reported. The incident occurred after Omar called for the abolishment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or face impeachment. "I don't let bullies win," Omar said after the attack, according to Euronews. The assailant was arrested.
In France, former senator Joël Guerriau was sentenced to four years in prison, with 18 months to be served, for drugging MP Sandrine Josso with ecstasy, Euronews reported. A French court found Guerriau, 68, guilty of spiking Josso's champagne with MDMA at his Paris apartment in November 2023, intending to sexually assault her. Guerriau denied any sexual motivation and said he would appeal. "It's a huge relief," Josso said after the sentencing, according to Euronews.
Adding to the international developments, Belarus joined US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace" initiative, Euronews reported. The move raised concerns due to President Alexander Lukashenko's continued crackdown on dissent and support for Russia in its war against Ukraine. Belarus faces severe sanctions from Brussels and other entities. The Board of Peace welcomed Belarus as a founding member, according to a statement on X.
