NASA WB-57 Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing in Houston
A NASA WB-57 aircraft made an emergency landing at Ellington Field in southeastern Houston on Tuesday morning after experiencing a mechanical issue with its landing gear. According to NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens, the aircraft touched down on the runway without its landing gear extended. The pilot maintained control of the vehicle as it slid down the runway, using friction to slow the aircraft.
The incident occurred at Ellington Field. Video footage captured by KHOU 11 television showed the aircraft's gear-up landing. No injuries were reported, and all crew members were safe, according to Stevens. "Today, a mechanical issue with one of NASA's WB-57s resulted in a gear-up landing at Ellington Field," Stevens said. "Response to the incident is ongoing, and all crew are safe at this time."
The WB-57 is one of NASA's three large aircraft used for high-altitude atmospheric research. As with any incident, a thorough investigation is expected to determine the cause of the mechanical failure.
