Spain to Grant Legal Status to Unauthorized Immigrants
Spain's government announced Tuesday it will grant legal status to potentially hundreds of thousands of immigrants living and working in the country without authorization, according to the Associated Press (NPR Politics). This move positions Spain in contrast to the increasingly harsh immigration policies seen in the United States and other parts of Europe.
The announcement comes as protests are planned in the U.S. against what some perceive as an immigration crackdown. Indivisible, the progressive coalition behind the "No Kings" demonstrations, has scheduled a third day of protest for March 28, Time magazine reported. The flagship event will be held in Minneapolis, a city that has become a focal point of opposition following the deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of federal immigration agents.
Gregory Bovino, as commander-at-large of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), has been a public figure in the midst of this controversy, according to Time. Bovino has overseen numerous detentions and deportations in cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Minneapolis. The killings in Minneapolis led to mass protests and criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, Time reported. Organizers of the "No Kings" protest are preparing for an unprecedented level of safety precautions at the upcoming event, Time noted.
In other news, New8, a collaboration between eight major European broadcasters, extended its "successful" partnership for another three years, Variety reported. The collaboration has produced popular shows such as "The Queen of Fucking Everything" and "Kabul."
Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, an aspiring leader, returned to his homeland on December 25 after 17 years in exile, Time reported. Rahman, who had been banned from local media for a decade by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, told Time, "My body is getting adjusted to this local weather...The thing is that I'm not very good at talking anyway, but if you ask me to do something, I try my best."
