Amazon Announces 16,000 Job Cuts Amid Restructuring Efforts
Amazon announced Wednesday it would reduce its workforce by approximately 16,000 employees as part of a company-wide effort to streamline operations and reduce bureaucracy. The announcement, which followed an accidental email sent to staff late Tuesday, detailed the cuts impacting roles across the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica, according to the BBC.
The layoffs are intended to "strengthen" the company by reducing "layers" within the organization, according to an email sent to staff by Beth Galetti, a senior vice president at Amazon, as reported by ABC News. Galetti stated the company was "working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted." The announcement comes after Amazon laid off 14,000 corporate employees in October, ABC News reported.
According to the BBC, the email detailing the job cuts was initially sent in error and quickly cancelled. However, the company confirmed the reductions early Wednesday as part of its plan to "remove bureaucracy" at the firm. Galetti stated that the company was not planning to make "bro" [broad?] announcements.
The job cuts are part of a broader trend of tech companies reducing their workforce amid economic uncertainty.
