Plane Crash in Colombia Kills 15, Storm Kristin Claims Lives in Portugal
A passenger plane crashed in northern Colombia, killing all 15 people on board, the country's state-run airline Satena confirmed on Tuesday. The Beechcraft 1900 aircraft "suffered a fatal accident," according to a Satena statement. The wreckage was located in a mountainous area in North Santander, Colombia, BBC World reported. The official passenger list included lawmaker Diógenes Quintero Amaya and Carlos Salcedo, a candidate in upcoming congressional elections. Contact with the plane was lost 11 minutes before it was scheduled to land in the city of Ocaña, near the Venezuelan border, at 12:05 local time, Satena reported.
Meanwhile, in Portugal, at least five people died after Storm Kristin tore through central and northern regions, causing flooding, landslides, and widespread damage, BBC World reported. The government described the storm as an "extreme climactic event," which led to school closures, damaged buildings, and severe travel disruptions. In the coastal city of Figueira da Foz, a Ferris wheel overturned, and several vehicles were damaged when part of a roof was torn from a building, according to EPAShutterstock. Portugal has experienced a series of storms in recent days, including one over the weekend where a man died after his car was swept away in floods.
