US Embassy in Venezuela to Reopen as Relations Thaw
CARACAS – The United States is taking steps to normalize relations with Venezuela, reopening its diplomatic mission in Caracas after seven years of closure. Laura Dogu, the US chargé d'affaires for Venezuela, arrived in the South American country on Saturday to lead the reopening, Euronews reported.
The move comes almost a month after a US military operation deposed former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to Euronews. The embassy's reopening signals a thaw in relations following the partial release of political prisoners.
The US embassy was closed in 2019.
In other news, Iranian protester Erfan Soltani, 26, who was arrested during protests on January 8, has been released on bail, Sky News reported. Soltani's family had been informed that he faced the death penalty, according to Kurdish and Iranian human rights organization Hengaw. US President Donald Trump had previously warned he would take "strong action" if any protesters were executed.
