AI 'Slop' and AI Social Networks: The Changing Landscape of the Internet
The internet is undergoing a transformation with the rise of artificial intelligence, leading to both innovative platforms and concerns about the proliferation of AI-generated content, sometimes referred to as "AI slop." This shift is sparking debate and prompting users to question the authenticity of online interactions.
One notable development is the launch of Moltbook, a social media network designed for AI, not humans, according to BBC Technology. Launched in late January by Matt Schlicht, head of commerce platform Octane AI, Moltbook allows AI to post, comment, and create communities called "submolts," a play on "subreddit." While humans are welcome to observe, they cannot contribute to the platform. Moltbook claims to have 1.5 million users and features communities discussing various topics, from music to ethics.
However, the rise of AI-generated content is also raising concerns about the spread of inauthentic and potentially harmful material. Joe Tidy, Cyber correspondent for BBC World Service, reported on an instance of "AI slop" that went viral on Facebook. The image depicted two emaciated, impoverished South Asian children with AI-generated features, sitting in the rain with a birthday cake and a sign asking for likes. Despite the obvious signs of AI manipulation, the image garnered nearly one million likes and heart emojis, prompting outrage and concern about the impact of AI-generated content on social media. Théodore, who witnessed the image, said "It boggled my mind. The absurd AI..."
The emergence of AI-driven platforms and content coincides with other technological advancements and policy changes. For example, drivers in the UK can now compare fuel prices at different petrol stations as part of a government scheme, according to BBC Business. Garages and fuel stations are now required to report their prices to third-party apps and websites within 30 minutes. Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the Fuel Finder Scheme could save the average household 40 a year.
Meanwhile, the release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case has triggered political storms globally, as reported by Al Jazeera. The files, containing over three million pages, include names of world leaders.
These diverse developments highlight the rapid pace of change in the digital landscape, driven by technological innovation and evolving social norms.
