US-Russia Nuclear Treaty Set to Expire, Raising Arms Race Concerns
The last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia, known as New START, is set to expire, raising concerns about a potential new arms race between the two nations. The treaty, signed in 2010 by then-Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, is a 15-year agreement that limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads, delivery systems, and launchers that each country can deploy, according to Vox.
Joshua Keating, a senior correspondent at Vox covering foreign policy and world news, highlighted the significance of the treaty's potential expiration.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump faces challenges on multiple fronts, including potential issues with the economy and immigration, even among some of his supporters, according to Vox. Additionally, Trump's foreign policy decisions, such as considering the acquisition of Greenland, have alienated Gen Z voters who largely favor fewer wars, Rachel Janfaza of The Up and Up, a research, media, and strategy firm focused on Gen Z, reported in Vox. Janfaza noted that this sentiment was an "underrated storyline" of the 2024 election.
The Justice Department recently released another set of files from its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier and convicted sex trafficker who had associations with prominent figures, including President Trump, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates, Vox reported.
