AI Boom Drives Demand for Next-Gen Nuclear, Metals, and GPUs
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is fueling unprecedented demand for energy, specialized processors, and raw materials, prompting innovation across multiple sectors. AI companies are investing heavily in massive data centers, creating a need for reliable and powerful energy sources, including next-generation nuclear power plants, which are touted as potentially cheaper and safer than older models, according to MIT Technology Review.
The surge in AI development is also impacting the demand for metals used in data centers, electric vehicles, and renewable energy projects. This increased demand comes at a time when extracting these metals is becoming more challenging. According to MIT Technology Review, miners have already exploited the most accessible resources. In response, companies are exploring innovative solutions like biotechnology to extract metals from lower-quality ore. For example, at the Eagle Mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the only active nickel mine in the US, the mine's owner began testing a new process developed by the startup Allonnia. This process uses a fermentation-derived broth to capture and remove impurities, allowing for nickel production from lower-quality ore. Kent Sorenson, Allonnia's chief technology officer, stated that this approach could help companies continue operating sites that have burned through higher-quality resources.
Furthermore, the AI boom is reshaping the semiconductor industry. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan announced at the Cisco AI Summit that the company will begin producing graphics processing units (GPUs), a market currently dominated by Nvidia, according to TechCrunch. GPUs are specialized processors used for gaming and training artificial intelligence models. Kevork Kechichian, Intel's executive vice president and general manager of the data center group, will oversee the project.
The increasing capabilities of AI are also being leveraged to provide insights into AI usage itself.
