U.S. venture capital firms are actively seeking AI investment opportunities globally, with India and Sweden emerging as key destinations, according to recent reports. The trend is highlighted by a16z's investment in Swedish startup Dentio and India's AI Impact Summit, which is attracting major tech players and government officials.
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) led a $2.3 million pre-seed round into Dentio, a Swedish startup using AI for dental practice administration, according to TechCrunch. Gabriel Vasquez, a partner at a16z, took nine flights from New York City to Stockholm in one year to scout for potential investments. This investment comes as a16z announced new funds totaling $15 billion. Stockholm is a natural stop for a16z, which previously achieved significant returns from backing Skype, cofounded by Swedes.
Meanwhile, India is hosting a four-day AI Impact Summit this week, attracting executives from major AI labs and Big Tech companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, and Cloudflare. The event expects 250,000 visitors and features prominent figures such as Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to deliver a speech with French President Emmanuel Macron. The country has earmarked $1.1 billion for a state-backed venture capital fund focused on AI and advanced technologies, according to TechCrunch.
The AI landscape is also seeing the emergence of new research-focused labs. Flapping Airplanes, a new lab focused on finding less data-hungry ways to train AI, recently secured $180 million in seed funding. The founders are focused on ideas about the human brain.
In other AI news, Ricursive Intelligence raised $335 million at a $4 billion valuation in just four months. The co-founders, Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini, previously worked at Google Brain and were early employees at Anthropic. They earned acclaim at Google by creating the Alpha Chip, an AI tool that could generate solid chip layouts in hours.
However, not all AI developments are met with enthusiasm. The creation of Moltbook, a Reddit clone where AI agents using OpenClaw could communicate, caused some to question the implications of AI's potential for self-organization, according to TechCrunch.
