Iran's judiciary denied reports it planned to execute detained protester Erfan Soltani. The denial followed claims by a Kurdish human rights group that Soltani's execution was imminent. Soltani, 26, was arrested in connection with recent protests in Iran.
The Norway-based Hengaw organization reported Soltani's family was informed he faced execution on Wednesday. Hengaw later stated the execution was "postponed," but concerns remained. The Iranian judiciary stated Soltani faces charges of "colluding against national security" and "propaganda activities." These charges do not carry the death penalty.
US President Donald Trump responded to the initial reports, warning Iran against executing protesters. The Iranian judiciary called reports of Soltani's impending execution "news fabrication."
Soltani is reportedly one of 18,000 protesters detained in Iran over the past three weeks. The protests stemmed from widespread discontent over economic conditions and government policies.
The situation remains fluid. Hengaw continues to express concern for Soltani's safety. The Iranian judiciary maintains Soltani's charges do not warrant execution.
