The Future of Data Centers: Will Smartphones Make Them Obsolete?
The dominance of massive data centers could be challenged by the increasing capabilities of smartphones, according to Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity. In a recent podcast with host Prakhar Gupta, Srinivas suggested that powerful, personalized AI tools will eventually run directly on devices, eliminating the need to transmit data to and from remote data centers.
Srinivas argued that AI will function on hardware already inside personal devices, rather than relying on remote computers. This shift could potentially render large data centers obsolete.
Apple's AI system, Apple Intelligence, already incorporates this trend by running some features on specialized chips within its devices. While vast data centers continue to be built worldwide, the future may see a move towards decentralized, on-device AI processing.
