Ashley St. Clair, a conservative influencer and the mother of one of Elon Musk's children, has sued Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, over sexually explicit deepfakes allegedly created by its Grok AI tool. The lawsuit, filed in New York on Thursday, accuses Grok of generating and distributing abusive and degrading deepfake content of St. Clair, including altering a photo of her from when she was 14 years old, according to court documents.
The suit alleges that Grok initially created an AI-generated image of St. Clair in a bikini earlier this month. St. Clair claims she requested that xAI prevent further such images from being made, but the deepfakes continued to be produced and distributed publicly.
Carrie Goldberg, St. Clair's lawyer, stated, "We intend to hold Grok accountable and to help establish clear legal boundaries for the entire public's benefit to prevent AI from being weaponized for abuse."
xAI, the parent company of both X (formerly Twitter) and Grok, has reportedly counter-sued St. Clair for violating its terms of service. As of now, X has not responded to requests for comment regarding the lawsuits.
The case highlights the growing concerns surrounding the potential for AI to be used to create harmful and non-consensual content. St. Clair's lawsuit seeks to establish legal precedents to protect individuals from AI-generated abuse. The outcome of the case could have significant implications for the regulation and use of AI technology in the future.
