England will launch a new £1 billion emergency cash fund in April. The Crisis and Resilience Fund will provide financial aid to low-income individuals. People facing unexpected financial hardship can apply through their local council. The fund aims to address sudden expenses or income loss.
The scheme begins at the start of April and will run for three years. Councils can distribute funds to those experiencing financial shock. This includes events like job loss or a broken boiler. The program is available regardless of current benefit status.
The Local Government Association expressed concern over funding levels. A recent survey indicated that many councils believe the funding is insufficient. The cash element marks a change from previous support methods.
This new fund replaces the temporary Household Support Fund. The previous fund had been extended since its creation in 2021. It was scheduled to end in March.
Councils will begin accepting applications in April. The government will monitor the fund's impact on local welfare needs.
