England will launch a new £1 billion emergency cash fund in April. The Crisis and Resilience Fund will provide financial aid to low-income individuals. People facing unexpected financial hardship can apply through their local council.
The fund begins at the start of April and will run for three years. It aims to help those experiencing a sudden income loss or unexpected expense. This includes situations like job loss or broken household appliances. The fund is accessible regardless of current benefit status.
The Local Government Association previously surveyed councils. The survey revealed concerns that the funding level may be insufficient. Many councils anticipate difficulty meeting local welfare needs.
The Crisis and Resilience Fund replaces the temporary Household Support Fund. The previous fund was established in 2021 and repeatedly extended. It was scheduled to end in March.
Councils will now administer the new fund. They will assess applications and distribute emergency cash to eligible individuals.
