Elon Musk's Boring Company is digging into a potential new project in Nevada, exploring the feasibility of a tunnel connecting Reno to Tesla's Gigafactory. Documents revealed that the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), a non-profit focused on attracting businesses to the state, shelled out $50,000 to the Boring Company in October. This payment covered the creation of conceptual designs and a feasibility report for an alternative transportation solution to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, the massive business park where Tesla's Gigafactory is located.
The potential tunnel represents one of several options being considered to ease the growing pains of increased traffic and accidents along Interstate 80. The highway has seen a surge in activity as more data centers and other companies flock to the 107,000-acre Industrial Center, situated east of Reno and Sparks.
Tesla and Panasonic, the two anchor tenants of the Industrial Center, have reportedly been in communication with the Nevada Governor's Office since at least last spring regarding transportation concerns. The influx of businesses and employees has put a strain on existing infrastructure, leading to increased congestion and safety issues.
