European Leaders Condemn Trump's Tariff Threat Over Greenland Proposal
European leaders voiced strong opposition to a threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on eight allied nations opposed to his potential acquisition of Greenland. The proposed tariffs, which could reach as high as 25%, target Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland.
The tariffs, announced by Trump, are set to take effect on February 1st, starting at 10%, with the possibility of rising to 25%. According to reports, the tariffs would remain in place until a deal is reached.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the tariff threat as "completely wrong," while French President Emmanuel Macron deemed it "unacceptable." The remarks followed Trump's announcement regarding the tariffs.
The controversy stems from Trump's earlier interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. The proposal was met with resistance from Danish officials. Protests against any potential U.S. acquisition of Greenland took place on Saturday.
