Syria and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) agreed to a nationwide ceasefire effective immediately. The agreement, announced by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, ends two weeks of clashes. It also outlines a plan for the SDF's integration into Syrian military and state institutions.
The ceasefire is part of a 14-point agreement. This agreement aims to restore Syrian government control over al-Hasakah, Deir Ezzor, and Raqqa governorates. President al-Sharaa met with US Special Envoy Tom Barrack in Damascus prior to the announcement. Barrack lauded the agreement as progress towards a "unified Syria." SDF commander Mazloum Abdi's planned attendance was postponed due to weather. His visit is rescheduled for Monday.
The deal's immediate impact involves the cessation of hostilities across the country. The Syrian government claims near-full control. The agreement's policy details involve integrating SDF fighters into the Syrian army. It also includes incorporating SDF-run institutions into the Syrian state.
Kurdish-led forces established an autonomous administration during the Syrian conflict.
President al-Sharaa stated that Syrian state institutions will now work to reassert control in the designated areas. Further negotiations are expected to finalize the integration process.
