Chile declared a state of catastrophe in the Ñuble and Biobío regions due to deadly wildfires. The blazes, located about 300 miles south of Santiago, claimed at least 16 lives. President Gabriel Boric announced the declaration on Sunday.

The fires forced the evacuation of at least 20,000 people. One major fire swept through forests near Concepción, destroying approximately 250 homes. Local media reported scenes of devastation, including charred vehicles. Firefighters battled 24 fires across Chile, with the most critical in the affected regions.

The declaration of a state of catastrophe makes all resources available for firefighting and relief efforts. The fires have already impacted 50,000 acres in Ñuble and Biobío.
