Global restaurant chains face accusations of deceptive practices on delivery apps. Pizza Hut, TGI Fridays, and others allegedly operate under different names. This gives the appearance of independent businesses. Small restaurant owners say this makes it impossible to compete.
The accusations surfaced recently in Cardiff, Wales. Justina John, owner of ONJA Taste of Tanzania, voiced concerns. She noted the overwhelming presence of chains masquerading as independents on Deliveroo and Just Eat. This practice, she says, is unfair to small businesses.
Independent restaurants claim this tactic is a "killer" to family businesses. Peter Backman, CEO of theDelivery.World, says it's misleading if customers intentionally seek independent restaurants. The immediate impact is increased pressure on local eateries.
Delivery apps use algorithms to rank restaurants. These algorithms may inadvertently favor chains with multiple brands. This further disadvantages independent businesses. AI could be used to detect and flag these deceptive practices.
Future regulations may address transparency on delivery platforms. Further investigation is expected to determine the extent of this practice. The focus will be on ensuring fair competition.
