The death toll from raging forest fires in southern Chile climbed to 18. President Gabriel Boric declared a state of emergency Sunday. Over 50,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes.

Two dozen active fires are burning across the Biobio and Nuble regions. These regions are located approximately 500km south of Santiago. Security Minister Luis Cordero confirmed 16 deaths earlier. The updated toll reflects the fires' rapid spread.

President Boric warned the death toll is expected to rise. A nighttime curfew was imposed in the most affected areas. The government is mobilizing resources to combat the blazes and assist displaced residents.

Chile's central-southern regions are prone to wildfires, especially during the summer months. Dry conditions and strong winds are exacerbating the current crisis. The cause of the fires is under investigation.
