Apple is reportedly planning to transform Siri into an AI chatbot, akin to OpenAI's ChatGPT, according to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The revamped Siri, internally codenamed "Campos," is expected to be integrated into iOS 27 and could be a key feature of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
The new Siri chatbot will be designed to handle both voice and text inputs. This shift marks a potential change in strategy for Apple, as Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president, had previously expressed a preference for AI integration that was readily available when needed, rather than a chatbot format.
Increased pressure from the success of AI chatbots developed by other companies is reportedly a factor in Apple's decision. The company may also be responding to potential competition from OpenAI, which is reportedly planning to enter the hardware market, led by former Apple design head Jony Ive.
Apple has faced challenges in the AI space, having delayed the rollout of a more personalized Siri multiple times. Last year, the company explored potential partnerships with AI developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, testing their technologies. Ultimately, Apple selected Google's Gemini to power some of its AI features.
The integration of a chatbot-style Siri into iOS 27 could represent a significant step for Apple in catching up with advancements in AI technology. The company's WWDC presentation in June is expected to provide further details on the new Siri and Apple's broader AI strategy.
