Amazon Prime Video's "Barbershop" TV series expanded its cast with eight new guest stars, injecting fresh comedic talent into the ensemble, Variety reported. Zack Fox, known for his roles in "Abbott Elementary" and "The Vince Staples Show," joined the cast as Alderman Warren. Ego Nwodim of "Saturday Night Live" and "Poker Face" fame took on the role of Shelly-Ann.
Diallo Riddle, recognized for his work on "South Side" and "Sherman's Showcase," was cast as Pastor Devante. Ziwe, the creator and star of her self-titled show "Ziwe" and known for "Dickinson," appeared as Abbi. Tituss Burgess, celebrated for his performances in "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Schmigadoon," played Juan Grillz.
Comedian CP, with credits in "Sunday After Six" and "How to Die Alone," took on the role of Marvin. Devon Walker, another "Saturday Night Live" cast member with experience in "Big Mouth," played Southside Swole. Belmont Cameli, known for "Saved by the Bell" and "Alto Knights," rounded out the new additions as Shep.
The "Barbershop" series, inspired by the popular film franchise, aims to capture the same blend of humor, heart, and social commentary that made the movies a cultural touchstone. The addition of these comedic actors signals a continued focus on delivering sharp, relevant humor that resonates with a diverse audience. The original "Barbershop" films, starting with the 2002 hit starring Ice Cube and Anthony Anderson, were praised for their authentic portrayal of Black community life and their willingness to tackle topical issues with wit and insight. The franchise's enduring appeal lies in its ability to balance comedy with meaningful conversations, making it a significant cultural force.
The "Barbershop" TV series seeks to build on this legacy by bringing those familiar themes and dynamics to a new generation of viewers. With a mix of established stars and rising talents, the show is positioned to offer a fresh perspective on the issues facing communities today, all while maintaining the lighthearted spirit that made the original films so beloved. The series' producers have not yet announced a premiere date.
