Ukrainian, Russian, and U.S. officials convened in Abu Dhabi on Friday for the first trilateral discussions since the onset of the war in Ukraine. The meeting signals potential progress in efforts to resolve the conflict.
The talks, expected to last two days, may address postwar control of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This region has been a significant obstacle in previous negotiations. The Foreign Ministry of the United Arab Emirates confirmed the meeting in a statement.
The Kremlin acknowledged that Russian officials would participate in a security working group meeting in Abu Dhabi. The Russian delegation is headed by Igor Kostyukov, the head of Russia's military intelligence. Rustem Umerov, the secretary of the National Security Council, is leading the Ukrainian delegation.
A separate bilateral working group on economic issues between Russia and the United States was also scheduled, according to the Kremlin. Direct meetings between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators have been infrequent in past negotiations.
