Google Photos introduced a new generative AI-powered feature called Me Meme on Thursday, enabling users to create memes using their own images. The feature, initially discovered in development last October by Android Authority, allows users to combine a photo template with a personal image to generate a meme.
The Me Meme feature is currently available to users in the United States as an experimental tool. Google announced the launch via its Photos Community site. According to Google, the feature is designed as a fun way to explore photos and experiment with Google's Gemini AI technology, specifically Nano Banana, its popular AI image model.
Google advises users to upload well-lit, focused, and front-facing photos to achieve optimal results, noting that, as an experimental feature, generated images may not always perfectly replicate the original photo. The company aims to provide a lighthearted avenue for users to engage with their photo library and explore the capabilities of AI in content creation.
AssembleDebug (Shiv) initially spotted the feature in October 2025. In a post on X, AssembleDebug stated, "The 'Me meme' feature which I spotted back in October 2025 is finally announced by Google. This is an experimental feature which will be available first for users in US only."
The introduction of Me Meme reflects a growing trend of integrating generative AI into everyday applications. By leveraging its Gemini AI technology, Google is positioning Photos as more than just a storage solution, transforming it into a platform for creative expression and personalized content generation. The feature's accessibility to U.S. users marks the initial phase of its rollout, with potential expansion to other regions depending on user feedback and the feature's performance.
