Anthropic released a new version of its mid-size Sonnet model, while Mistral AI acquired Koyeb in a move to bolster its cloud ambitions, highlighting the rapid advancements and evolving landscape of the artificial intelligence industry. WordPress.com also announced the addition of an AI assistant to its platform, further integrating AI into everyday applications. These developments come as the industry grapples with the increasing importance of memory in AI infrastructure and the potential for foldable phones to reshape the laptop market.
Anthropic's Sonnet 4.6, the latest iteration of its mid-size model, was released, with improvements in coding, instruction-following, and computer use, according to TechCrunch. This new version will be the default model for Free and Pro plan users. The beta release of Sonnet 4.6 will feature a context window of 1 million tokens, double the size of the largest window previously available for Sonnet. This expansion allows the model to handle extensive codebases, lengthy contracts, or numerous research papers in a single request. The launch follows the recent release of Opus 4.6 and anticipates an updated Haiku model in the coming weeks.
In a separate development, Mistral AI, valued at $13.8 billion, made its first acquisition, purchasing Koyeb, a Paris-based startup specializing in AI app deployment and infrastructure management, as reported by TechCrunch. This acquisition underscores Mistral's ambition to become a full-stack player in the AI space. Mistral had previously announced Mistral Compute, an AI cloud infrastructure offering, which it hopes Koyeb will accelerate. Koyeb, founded in 2020 by former employees of French cloud provider Scaleway, aims to simplify data processing for developers, a concept known as serverless.
The increasing demand for AI is also impacting the hardware landscape. As TechCrunch noted, the cost of DRAM chips has surged approximately sevenfold in the past year, reflecting the growing importance of memory in AI infrastructure. Semiconductor analyst Dan O'Laughlin, speaking with Val Bercovici, chief AI officer at Weka, highlighted the significance of memory chips in optimizing AI queries.
Meanwhile, WordPress.com introduced a built-in AI assistant designed to work within the website platform, according to TechCrunch. This tool allows site owners to make changes to their website's content and layout using natural language commands. Users can adjust the site's layout, style, or other patterns by issuing commands to the AI assistant. The company noted that these instructions do not require precisely tailored prompts, allowing for more general language commands.
The Verge also discussed the potential for foldable phones to evolve into laptops, suggesting a future where phones could serve as the primary computing device.
