Chile Wildfires Kill 18; 'Catastrophe' Declared
Multiple news sources report that Chile has declared a state of catastrophe in the Ñuble and Biobío regions due to devastating wildfires that have already killed at least 18 people and forced the evacuation of over 50,000, with strong winds and high temperatures exacerbating the blazes and hindering firefighting efforts. The Chilean armed forces are being deployed to assist, as the fires have destroyed hundreds of homes and thousands of hectares, and the death toll is expected to rise.
