Thousands of protesters marched in Copenhagen Saturday, from City Hall to the U.S. embassy, demonstrating against President Trump's expressed desire to acquire Greenland. Waving Greenlandic flags, the crowd chanted "Greenland is not for sale," reflecting widespread opposition to the potential U.S. acquisition.
Many demonstrators donned red hats, a play on Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan, but instead read "Make America Go Away," signaling their strong disapproval of the President's interest in Greenland. The protest followed repeated endorsements by Trump of acquiring the island, citing U.S. national security interests as justification. "One way or the other, we're going to have Greenland," Trump told reporters recently aboard Air Force One.
The demonstration occurred shortly after a bipartisan Congressional delegation visited Denmark to discuss the matter. The notion of the U.S. purchasing Greenland first arose in 2019 when Trump publicly floated the idea, which was swiftly rejected by the Danish government. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The U.S. already maintains a military presence in Greenland, specifically at Thule Air Base, a critical installation for missile warning and space surveillance. The base's strategic location in the Arctic region is a key factor in the U.S. military's interest in Greenland.
While the Danish government has consistently stated that Greenland is not for sale, President Trump has continued to express his belief that acquiring the island would be beneficial for the United States. The future of any potential negotiations or further actions regarding Greenland remains uncertain.
