Black Forest Labs, a German AI startup founded by former Stability AI engineers, launched FLUX.2 klein, a new open-source AI image generator capable of producing images in under a second, according to a VentureBeat report. The release, which occurred on January 15, 2026, emphasizes speed and lower compute requirements.
The klein series includes two primary parameter counts: 4 billion (4B) and 9 billion (9B). The 4B parameter version is available under the Apache 2.0 license, enabling commercial use. The model weights are available on Hugging Face and code on Github.
According to VentureBeat, the release demonstrates a trend towards democratizing AI technology and lowering barriers to entry. The 4B parameter version is already being integrated into platforms like Fal.ai.
Black Forest Labs previously released the larger models in the FLUX.2 family (max and pro) in November of 2025. These models focused on photorealism and "grounding search" capabilities. In contrast, the klein series prioritizes speed and accessibility. The models generate images in less than a second on an Nvidia GB200.
