Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has settled a social media addiction lawsuit just days before a landmark trial was set to begin in Los Angeles, according to lawyers at a California Superior Court hearing. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
The lawsuit was brought by a 19-year-old woman identified as K.G.M., who alleged that the algorithmic design of social media platforms led to her addiction. Snap told the BBC that the parties were "pleased to have been able to resolve this matter in an amicable manner."
Other defendants in the case, including Instagram parent Meta, ByteDance's TikTok, and Alphabet's YouTube, have not settled and remain part of the ongoing legal proceedings. The case is considered a landmark one, potentially setting a precedent for future lawsuits against social media companies regarding addiction and the impact of their platform designs.
