Meta announced Wednesday that it is rolling out advertising on Threads to all users worldwide, a move poised to significantly impact the social media advertising landscape. The expansion, commencing next week, will be implemented gradually, with Meta anticipating the full rollout to take several months.
This monetization strategy arrives as Threads reports impressive user growth. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly highlighted the platform's potential, envisioning it as a major player and a direct competitor to X. Threads currently boasts over 400 million monthly active users. Zuckerberg previously told investors that the app had a strong possibility of reaching 1 billion users within a few years. The platform's growth trajectory has been rapid, reaching 200 million users by mid-2024, 320 million by January 2025, and then adding another 30 million by April of this year.
The introduction of advertising on Threads is expected to open up new revenue streams for Meta and provide advertisers with access to a substantial and engaged user base. This move could intensify competition within the social media advertising market, potentially impacting advertising rates and strategies across various platforms.
Threads began testing ads in the U.S. and Japan a year prior to this global rollout. In April, the platform opened its advertising capabilities to global advertisers. Meta has streamlined the process for existing advertisers to extend their reach to Threads, enabling them to automatically place ads through Meta's Advantage program and via manual campaigns. The platform supports image and video ad formats.
Looking ahead, the success of Threads' advertising rollout will depend on user acceptance and the platform's ability to deliver effective advertising solutions. The gradual implementation suggests a cautious approach, allowing Meta to monitor performance and make adjustments as needed. The company's ability to leverage its existing advertising infrastructure and data analytics capabilities will be crucial in maximizing the revenue potential of Threads.
