Ecuador announced it would impose a 30 percent security tariff on imports from Colombia starting next month, citing Colombia's failure to adequately address drug trafficking and illegal mining. President Daniel Noboa revealed the measure on Wednesday in Quito, according to Al Jazeera.
The tariff, reminiscent of past policies enacted by former United States President Donald Trump, was implemented due to a perceived lack of cooperation from Colombia in combating these issues, despite Ecuador's ongoing efforts. Noboa demanded a stronger commitment to joint border security and tangible progress in Colombia's efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal mining, Al Jazeera reported.
According to reports, the tariff would remain in place until Ecuador observes significant improvements in Colombia's actions against these illicit activities. President Noboa also pointed to a significant trade deficit with Colombia as a contributing factor to the decision.
