Blue Origin Announces TeraWave, a 6 Tbps Satellite Internet Network
Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos' space company, announced TeraWave, a satellite internet network designed to deliver data speeds up to 6 Tbps, according to a TechCrunch report. The network will target enterprise, data center, and government customers.
The TeraWave constellation will consist of a mix of 5,280 satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO) and 128 in medium-Earth orbit (MEO). Blue Origin plans to begin deploying the first satellites in late 2027. The company has not yet released a timeline for the completion of the entire network.
The LEO satellites will use RF connectivity and achieve maximum data transfer speeds of 144 Gbps. The MEO satellites will utilize optical links capable of reaching the significantly higher speed of 6 Tbps. For context, SpaceX's Starlink currently maxes out at 400 Mbps.
TeraWave aims to provide connectivity to areas underserved by terrestrial infrastructure. The network has the potential to reshape the competitive landscape of satellite internet services, positioning Blue Origin alongside Amazon's Leo network.
