Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, announced Wednesday plans to develop TeraWave, a new megaconstellation. The constellation aims to deliver data speeds up to 6Tbps globally. It will consist of 5,408 optically interconnected satellites.
The majority of satellites will reside in low-Earth orbit, with the remainder in medium-Earth orbit. Low-Earth orbit satellites will provide up to 144Gbps via radio spectrum. Medium-Earth orbit satellites will offer higher data rates through optical links. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp stated the constellation provides reliability and resilience for real-time operations and massive data movement.
TeraWave targets the enterprise market, differentiating itself from constellations like SpaceX's Starlink. The constellation aims to provide backup connectivity during outages, ensuring critical operations continue. It also offers on-demand scalability and rapid global deployment.
Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, is a private space company focused on developing reusable launch vehicles and space technologies. The company has previously focused on space tourism and lunar lander development. The timeline for TeraWave deployment and financial investment details were not disclosed in the initial announcement.
