Seven Countries Agree to Join Trump's Board of Peace, Russia Still Considering
Seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt, have agreed to join U.S. President Donald Trump's Board of Peace, according to a joint statement released Wednesday. The announcement follows Israel's earlier confirmation of its participation in the initiative, which was initially conceived to address the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted an invitation to join the board. While President Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin had also agreed to participate, Putin indicated that Russia was still studying the invitation, according to BBC World.
The Board of Peace was initially thought to be aimed at helping end the two-year war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and oversee reconstruction. However, the proposed charter does not mention the Palestinian territory and appears to be designed for broader application.
Concerns have been raised regarding the board's purpose and potential overlap with the United Nations, leading some countries to decline participation. The board's charter is set to take effect upon execution by its initial members.
