LIV Golf announced Friday that its tournament would be held in August at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, further solidifying the financial connections between the Saudi government and the Trump family. This event marks the latest in a series of at least six tournaments the Saudi-backed league has staged at Trump-owned resorts in the United States over the past four years.
The organization, financially supported by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, which is valued at nearly $1 trillion, has previously held annual tournaments at Trump Doral in Miami, in addition to events at Bedminster. The Trump Organization benefits financially from hosting these events through fees and increased business from ticket sales.
When questioned about his family's business dealings with foreign government-funded entities, President Trump stated he saw no ethical conflict. "I have a very honest family," he said in an interview with The New York Times this month. "Why wouldn’t I let them do things?"
The relationship between the Trump family and the Saudi government has grown significantly in recent years. LIV Golf's decision to continue hosting events at Trump properties underscores the ongoing financial partnership. The move has drawn criticism from various groups, citing concerns about Saudi Arabia's human rights record and the potential for conflicts of interest.
The Bedminster tournament is expected to feature top golfers who have joined the LIV Golf league, lured by lucrative contracts and prize money. While specific player performances and scores from the upcoming event remain to be seen, previous LIV Golf tournaments have showcased competitive play and significant payouts. The tournament at Bedminster is anticipated to draw large crowds and generate substantial revenue for the Trump Organization.
