A 12-year-old boy died from injuries sustained in a shark attack in Sydney Harbour. Nico Antic was attacked on January 18 while jumping off a rock ledge with friends. The incident occurred last Sunday afternoon. Authorities suspect a bull shark was responsible.
Nico suffered serious leg injuries. He was taken to Sydney Children's Hospital in critical condition. He underwent surgery and was placed in an induced coma. His parents, Lorena and Juan, confirmed his death in a statement.
Friends bravely jumped into the water to help Nico after the attack. An online fundraiser for the family raised over $240,000. The family, originally from Argentina, described Nico as happy, friendly, and sporty.
The attack was one of four reported along the New South Wales coast over two days. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the attack. Authorities will likely increase patrols in the area.
